How we measure visibility

Numbers you can actually explain.

AI visibility is noisy enough without adding mystery scores on top. Insight measures whether brands appear, get recommended and earn citations across the searches and AI answers that matter to them. Every score is tied back to the underlying evidence, so you can see what changed and why.

Among Ventric + tracked competitors

Your visibility compared with the competitors you've chosen to track.

No black box. No magic number.

Plenty of visibility tools can give you a score. The harder question is knowing what that score actually means. Insight keeps different signals separate. Being mentioned isn't the same as being recommended. Being recommended isn't the same as being cited. And AI visibility isn't the same as ranking in Google. That means there isn't one convenient “AI Authority Score” to chase. Instead, you can see the individual signals, the evidence behind them, and where your visibility is changing.

Useful measurements. Not one meaningless average.

Missing data doesn't become bad performance.

If an AI provider fails to return an answer, Insight doesn't pretend your brand wasn't mentioned. The failed check is reported as missing coverage and removed from the result. The same principle applies to citations. If a channel can't provide citation evidence, it isn't quietly counted as a non-citation.

How the rate is built

  1. 48 expected answers in the pack
  2. 45 returned and included · 3 failed (coverage)
  3. Found in 22 of 45 = 48.9%
  4. Not 22 of 48

You shouldn't lose visibility points because a provider failed to answer.

Exact coverage rules are in technical detail.

Visibility based on the searches that matter to you.

Insight checks a defined set of prompts across supported AI platforms on a regular schedule. Those prompts reflect the questions potential customers might actually ask, from early research through to high-intent searches. Commercially important prompts can carry more weight, but the unweighted result remains available too.

Google visibility and AI visibility aren't the same thing.

Insight brings traditional search and AI visibility together, but doesn't combine them into one artificial score. A business can rank well in Google and still rarely appear in AI answers — or show up in AI answers while organic rankings lag. Both matter; they are not the same signal.

AI answers change. Your measurement shouldn't pretend they don't.

Ask the same platform twice and the answer can change. Insight keeps the prompt set and methodology consistent, compares like-for-like scheduled checks, and shows sample size and coverage. Trends matter more than a single run.

Manual checks stay visible

Same-day re-runs help you inspect answers. They are not the customer trend baseline.

Share of voice, with the competitors that actually matter.

Headline share of voice uses the competitors you've chosen to track. Directories, publishers and trade bodies are treated separately. If the competitive set changes, Insight records that rather than pretending periods are directly comparable.

What Insight deliberately keeps separate

Good measurement is partly about knowing where to stop. Insight will not invent a blended authority number, pretend to cover every AI conversation, or turn missing data into a performance hit.

No universal AI Authority Score

Signals stay separate so you can explain each one.

No claim to represent every AI conversation

We measure tracked prompts on disclosed platforms, not every personalised chat.

No invented traffic estimates

Search Console and GA4 stay as Google’s metrics when connected.

No failed-check penalty

Provider failures are coverage loss, not a lower visibility score.

Platforms Insight supports today: GPT-4.1, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Sonar, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini. See also the Privacy Policy.

Mention rate

Headline Found in answers is the prompt-weighted mention rate over successful observations only.

AI mention rate

Σ (prompt weight × mentioned)

Σ (prompt weight) over successful observations

× 100

Failed provider calls leave the denominator and show as coverage loss. An unweighted companion (for example 20/48) always sits beside the weighted headline.

Recommendation rate

Recommendation is stored separately from mention. A brand counts as recommended when it opens a list or heading, or recommendation language applies in its own sentence. Warning language (“avoid”, “wouldn’t recommend”) can override.

AI recommendation rate

Σ (prompt weight × recommended)

Σ (prompt weight) over successful observations

× 100

Citation rates

Citation metrics use only channels that can return citation evidence. Modes that cannot cite are excluded — not scored as 0%.

Client-owned citation rate

Citation-capable successes citing a client-owned domain

Valid citation-capable successes

× 100

Supporting citation rate

Citation-capable mentions that include any citation URL

Citation-capable successes where the client is mentioned

× 100

Tracked share of voice

Headline SOV uses the client plus configured competitors only. Each entity counts at most once per answer. Directories, trade bodies, publishers and noise are excluded from the competitor set.

Tracked share of voice

Σ (prompt weight × client present in set)

Σ (prompt weight × entity count in client + tracked competitors)

× 100

A discovered-competitor companion includes only names classified as direct commercial peers.

Appearance position and mean rank

When brands are listed, order comes from first appearance in the stored answer text among businesses — not scroll depth or fold treatment.

Ranked #1 rate

Σ (prompt weight × client appearance rank is 1)

Σ (prompt weight) over successful observations

× 100

Mean rank when listed = sum of appearance ranks ÷ count of successful observations with a non-null rank. Lower is better; it is not scaled to 0–100.

Cross-provider overall

Scores are calculated per channel first. A customer-facing overall is filled only when every configured provider in the pack is eligible. Incomplete packs show a null overall with a reason — Insight does not renormalise a subset under the same Overall label.

Eligibility today: successful / expected coverage at least 80% and at least min(8, expected) successful observations. Soft incomplete band: 80%–95%. Configured channels use equal weights; that is disclosed policy, not a claim that every surface has equal consumer traffic.

Prompt weighting

Default prompt weights by intent (overridable per prompt):

  • High commercial intent · 1.5
  • Discovery · 1.0
  • Informational · 0.75
  • Branded / competitor prompts · 1.0

Weighted headline rates always keep an unweighted n/N companion.

Coverage and failures

Provider failures and empty failed answers are excluded from rate denominators and reported as missing coverage. Citation-incapable channels are excluded from citation rates. Coverage is shown as successful / expected alongside each score.

Organic and search scores

Classic SEO scores stay separate from AI rates. Organic ranking visibility (market-scores-v1.4):

Organic ranking visibility

Σ (position points × commercial weight × volume multiplier)

Σ (100 × commercial weight × volume multiplier)

× 100

Position points: 1→100, 2→85, 3→75, 4–5→60, 6–10→40, 11–20→20, 21–50→8, 51–100→2, not found→0. Search presence adds discrete weights (organic top 10 40, local pack 25, AI Overview citation 20, featured snippet 10, other feature 5). GSC clicks, impressions, CTR and position, and configured GA4 conversions, remain Google’s metrics.

AI Overview citations vs AI Mode

AI Overview citation on the Google SERP is a search-presence signal. Google AI Mode / LLM answer citations are probe citation metrics. They are labelled separately on purpose — do not conflate them in client reporting.

Limitations
  • No single blended AI health or Authority Score
  • No sentiment, framing, hallucination or factual-inaccuracy rates
  • Not a reproduction of every personalised consumer login session
  • No AI post-citation click-through as an Insight composite
  • No paid placements inside AI answers
  • Platforms currently supported: GPT-4.1, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Sonar, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini. Coverage depends on the site pack and enabled surfaces.
Analyst notes

Typical small tracked packs are useful for trends, competitive awareness and agency operations. Calling a pack Decision-Grade evidence for budget or exec strategy still needs larger prompt volume, repeats, and full disclosure of weights and intent mix. Weekly cadence, version stamps, immutable batches and per-provider scores are Decision-Grade practices — not an automatic claim about every dataset size.

Optional standards vocabulary: Insight’s presence and prominence measures align with language in the IAB’s Measuring Visibility in the AI Era (August 2026) without claiming full coverage of every IAB metric.
